Office Closure Notice

Georgia Tech Offices will be closed from December 23 through December 27.

The Registrar’s Office will be open for walk-in services from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Monday, December 30, and Tuesday, December 31. Staff will work remotely from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on these days.

All Georgia Tech Offices will be closed on Wednesday, January 1.

Advanced Standing

Examinations:

  1. Students who offer satisfactory evidence that they are qualified to do so may receive credit for a course by examination. Such an examination is called an examination for advanced standing.
  2. Examinations for advanced standing require the recommendation of the department of instruction in which the course is offered, and payment of the appropriate fee via TouchNet.
  3. Examinations for advanced standing will ordinarily be offered during the week of final examinations but must be arranged with each department directly. 
  4. A student will not be allowed to take an examination for advanced standing in a given course more than twice.
  5. Students will not be allowed to take an examination for advanced standing in a course for which the prerequisite(s) has not been met, except with the consent of the school offering the course.
  6. An examination for advanced standing will be reported with an S or U grade. Neither grade will be included in the calculation of the scholastic average.
  7. Advanced standing is not allowed for laboratory or studio classes, except with the consent of the school offering the course.
  8. Students may not use more than 9 credits of advanced standing to meet degree requirements.

Instructions:

  1. Please read all instructions/information before completing the request.

  2. For institute policy, reference section XII, item b. of the Student Rules and Regulations in the General Catalog.

  3. A fee of $90.00, per test, is required.

  4. A student must be currently enrolled to request an Examination for Advanced Standing. Special Students are not authorized to take Examinations for Advanced Standing.

  5. Use a separate request for each examination.  (Only one course may be listed on each request)

  6. Complete the personal identification items requested.

  7. Make a concise statement concerning why you think you are qualified to take an Examination for Advanced Standing in the specific course.

  8. Take this request to the School/Department of Instruction of the course concerned and request the recommendation of the School Director/Department Head.

  9. Once the recommendation is obtained, the School Director/Department Head will provide you with a link to make the exam payment through TouchNet.

  10. Submit a copy of the receipt to the School Director/Department Head and schedule the examination with the School/Department of Instruction.

  11. After completion of the examination, the School/Department of Instruction will report the results to the Office of the Registrar on a Non-Resident Credit Report Form. The grade will be reported as "S" or "U" (Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory). The results of all examinations must be reported whether or not the results are satisfactory.

  12. Only courses with satisfactory results are recorded on the student’s academic record, and are classified as resident credit.
